STOTT PILATES® Bone Health and Exercise for Osteoporosis Course

Osteoporosis is often called the "silent disease," but can profoundly impact quality of life through increased risk of fractures and decreased functional independence. This specialized Professional Development course is designed for movement professionals, physiotherapists and Pilates instructors eager to support their clients with evidence-based exercise strategies for optimal bone health.

Grounded in the latest research on bone physiology, biomechanics and exercise science, this course bridges theory and practice. Participants will engage in hands-on learning through functional assessments, case-based programming, and movement strategies tailored to clients’ individual risk profiles.

Using STOTT PILATES® Principles and exercises, this course equips you with the tools to confidently design and deliver effective interventions that promote lifelong bone health and mobility.

Invest in skills that matter: help clients protect their bone health while growing your expertise in one of the industry's fastest-growing specialty areas.

What you will learn

  • Describe the physiology and anatomy of bone health, including the structure and function of bone tissue and the process of bone remodeling.

  • Identify and explain key risk factors that contribute to osteoporosis and fracture risk, such as age, sex, lifestyle factors, and underlying medical conditions

  • Interpret the purpose and application of common diagnostic tools used in the assessment and monitoring of bone density and osteoporosis.

  • Assess movement and functional capacity in clients with osteoporosis using appropriate screening techniques and observational analysis.

  • Implement evidence-based exercise strategies that promote bone strength, improve muscular function, and support daily movement in individuals with osteoporosis.

  • Design individualized exercise programs based on client-specific risk profiles and goals, incorporating progression and modification principles as needed.

  • Apply fall prevention strategies to reduce fracture risk, including balance training, environmental modifications, and client education techniques.

What To Expect

Learn evidence-based osteoporosis programming

The course covers current research on bone physiology, biomechanics, and exercise science rather than relying on general fitness advice. Participants learn how exercise can support bone strength while minimizing fracture risk.

Gain confidence working with a growing client population

As populations age, more clients are presenting with osteoporosis and osteopenia. The course teaches how to identify risk factors, interpret common bone-health assessments, and adapt exercise appropriately.

Learn what movements to modify or avoid

Many Pilates exercises that are appropriate for healthy clients may need modification for someone with osteoporosis. The training provides guidance on contraindications, exercise selection, and safe progressions.

Improve assessment and clinical reasoning skills

Participants learn functional assessments, movement screening, balance evaluation, and case-based programming. This helps instructors move beyond simply teaching exercises and toward designing individualized programs.

Develop fall-prevention strategies

Falls are a major cause of osteoporotic fractures. The course includes balance training, movement education, and practical strategies to reduce fall risk and maintain independence.

Expand professional opportunities

Specialized training in bone health can help instructors serve older adults, rehabilitation clients, post-menopausal women, and healthcare referral networks. It adds a valuable niche to an instructor's skill set.

Practical application, not just theory

The course combines lectures with hands-on learning, functional assessments, programming workshops, and STOTT PILATES exercise applications, making it directly transferable to client sessions.
