This hands-on workshop, developed by the Merrithew® team, outlines the importance of postural analysis in programming STOTT PILATES® workouts. Discuss the differences between static and dynamic posture and consider how each affects exercise choices and modifications necessary. Review postural theory relating to the effect of certain postures on muscle length and strength and actively practice postural analysis.

Learning objectives

  1. Review the steps in conducting a formal postural analysis

  2. Learn how to identify muscular imbalances as they relate to faulty posture

The knee is a complex structure that can experience any number of injuries or conditions that interrupt normal functioning. This lecture/demo-style workshop, developed by the Merrithew® team, begins by exploring the anatomy and biomechanics involved in the normal, healthy functioning of the knee, followed by a discussion of some of the more common dysfunctions caused by injury or disease. Lastly, learn a variety of exercise progressions using the Pilates Reformer and accessories designed to be implemented in a post-rehabilitative setting to rebuild normal muscle action and movement patterning. Designed to prepare the body for specific activities and enhance performance, these exercises can challenge and promote optimal functioning.

The Lumbo-Pelvic region is an area of concern for a large number of clients. In this lecture/demo-style workshop, developed by the Merrithew® team, explore how the Reformer can be an integral tool in a post-rehab setting. After reviewing the anatomy, biomechanics and optimal functioning of the lumbar spine, pelvis, hip and surrounding musculature, discuss some of the more common injuries and conditions that can occur and the resulting dysfunction. Then, learn a wide variety of exercise options utilizing the Reformer and many of its accessories and how to identify better movement patterns and muscular activation. Explore how modifications can provide ideal programming choices for various stages of healing and functional reintegration.

In this lecture/demo-style workshop developed by the Merrithew® team, discover how Pilates programming on the Reformer can be ideal in a post-rehabilitative setting. The STOTT PILATES Principles form the foundation of the STOTT PILATES Movement System and provide the initial framework for programming. These concepts, when applied appropriately and strategically, will facilitate awareness and ensure optimal alignment as well as appropriate engagement of required muscles in clients. For the instructor, these Principles act as a reference tool that can be continually utilized when systematically evaluating and correcting static and dynamic alignment through any and all movement sequences. In each case, we'll examine what the Principle is, why it is important within a programming context, and how we can use movement to reinforce and integrate it into the system as a whole. Most women are able to return to exercise four to six weeks after a regular birth or when they get clearance from their physician. Many of the exercises performed during the second and third trimester of pregnancy will be suitable now, but other exercises can be added to focus on reactivating and stabilizing the pelvic floor, transversus abdominis and obliques as well as developing lumbo-pelvic stability. This gentle but effective workout, developed by the Merrithew® team, incorporates Toning Balls™ to get new moms back on the right track.

Total Barre™ Instructor Foundation Course

The Total Barre™ Foundation Course provides the groundwork education for Instructors, enabling them to produce safe, effective and varied barre training programs that address the needs and goals of every client. The Course presents 11 specially arranged and selected segments – accompanied by timed selections of music – that serve as the template for each session or class and produce a balanced and complete barre workout. Participants are also introduced to the Total Barre™ Principles.

The dynamic Total Barre™ program is intended for those already working in the fields of fitness or movement, or for those who want to learn how. Instructors looking to bring music-inspired movement to their clients will love the 11 specially arranged and selected segments that serve as the template for each session or class.

Segments are accompanied by timed selections of music, each at a designated pace and focus on individual areas of the body or movement type. After completing this program students will be prepared to teach the repertoire safely, effectively and with confidence.

Our Total Barre™ program provides a balanced and thorough blend of theory, observation and practical experience to help you master the repertoire.

  • This course has no pre-requisites for attendance.

  • All students who complete the Foundation Course are entitled to an internationally certified qualification as a Total Barre™ Instructor.

  • There are no royalty payment requirements or restriction of trade regarding areas where Total Barre™ can be taught.

  • The Total Barre™ Foundation Course will include a template, choreography, music suggestions and lots of ideas to extend the program within your studio or clinic – we encourage your own creativity to complete the Total Barre™ template.

  • Students will receive a world class large manual, online training support, access to logos & imagery and ongoing support from head office in Canada as well as local support from the Instructor Trainer in New Zealand.

This interactive seminar, developed by the Merrithew® team, draws upon the most current medical information, exercise guidelines and research available on pregnancy and movement. Appropriate STOTT PILATES® Matwork exercise adaptations are explored and programming concepts for teaching small groups and private clients are discussed. Anatomical and physiological changes, risk factors and movement considerations are also discussed with an eye to providing a safe and effective workout throughout all trimesters and provide strategies for building new pre-natal programs as well as enhancing those already in progress.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand appropriateness of STOTT PILATES Matwork as well as possible contraindications during pregnancy

  2. Learn about physiological changes throughout all three trimesters

Statistically, more than half of the adult population will experience lower back pain, either acute or ongoing, at some point in their lives. Mat-based Pilates exercises can be a valuable tool in the prevention and care of lower back problems. Developed by the Merrithew® programming team in keeping with current research, this workshop focuses on exercise modifications that can be beneficial in a number of circumstances. Major focus is placed on creating awareness and endurance of the local stabilizers of the lumbar spine and pelvic region. Although individual injuries are not covered, generalizations for specific exercise prescriptions are reviewed as a foundation for program development. Exercise choices for the prevention of back injuries and scope of practice concerns are also discussed.

Learning objectives

  1. Learn why and how STOTT PILATES® exercise can be beneficial for back problems

Fitness and Pilates Instructors meet a variety of clients who are restricted in their movements for a variety of reasons. Often, spinal flexion is contraindicated due to some specified concern. Learn how to modify Pilates exercises in a range of intensity levels to create workouts that achieve the primary goal of limiting spinal flexion while providing an effective full-body workout. Small handweights, Stability Cushions and the Flex-Band® exerciser are used to increase upper body resistance while further challenging the stability of the torso in a neutral alignment.

Learning objectives

  1. Discuss how the STOTT PILATES® Principles apply when movement is restricted

  2. Discover how to create a challenging workout without altering spinal alignment

  3. Learn to incorporate small handweights in a full flexion-free workout

  4. Explore exercise modifications in order to keep the workout safe

Experience new movement sequences and progressions to build strength and endurance, improve movement health and enhance athletic preparedness. Based on the four key components of athletic conditioning: Activation, Conditioning, Endurance and Recovery, this workshop reviews traditional approaches to performance-based training, introduces and highlights newer methodology and concepts and explores how they can be combined with the STOTT PILATES® Movement System. Created by the Merrithew® Programming team, this workshop demonstrates innovative ways of structuring and designing a Reformer-based program for the everyday athlete and beyond.

Learning objectives

  1. Receive greater insight into various training methodologies and concepts that can complement the STOTT PILATES repertoire

  2. Gain greater understanding and clarification of commonly used terminology related to performance-based athletic conditioning

  3. Explore and experience movement patterns and sequences to activate, engage and integrate the whole body
